One strategy to use to improve reading comprehension is a K-W-L chart. K-W-Ls are very helpful for setting a purpose for reading.
First, preview the text by reading the title, scanning the text for questions and graphics, reading author information and paying attention to words in bold type, headings, and any charts or graphs.
Next, create a K-W-L chart. This is a very simple 3 column chart as shown below.


Once your chart is drawn out, complete the first two columns. Write down things you already know about the topic of the text. In the second column, write things you want to know about the topic.
Then, after reading the text, fill out the third column which is things you learned in the text. Doing this will help you focus as you read.
Since the object here is to improve your reading comprehension in English, try completing the chart in English.
